If you’re a travel enthusiast who loves discovering places that blend nature and history, Maratea is a must-see destination, and the Statue of the Redeemer is undoubtedly its most iconic landmark. The statue, created in 1965 by sculptor Bruno Innocenti, stands atop Mount San Biagio and overlooks the entire Tyrrhenian coast from its height of 21 meters, visible even from miles away.

Its location is no accident: the mountain was already a pilgrimage site for the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Porto, and the Redentore was placed there with the symbolic aim of protecting the city and the sailors along the Tyrrhenian coast. Among the interesting facts about this marvelous work of art is that the statue was built in several sections and carried on the shoulders of workers to the summit. On days with strong winds or mist, the Redentore seems to almost float above the landscape, creating a striking effect that attracts photographers and lovers of panoramic views from all over the world.

The journey to reach it is an experience in itself. The road winds through hairpin turns nestled in the Mediterranean scrub, offering panoramic views of both the sea and the ancient village of Maratea.
During the climb, it’s impossible not to be enchanted by the variety of vegetation: maritime pines, centuries-old olive trees, and fragrant shrubs that create a perfect blend of landscape and tranquility. Several rest areas along the way offer the chance to stop and take wonderful photographs or simply contemplate the natural beauty of this evocative place.

Once you reach the summit, the statue stands in all its grandeur. The Redentore is, in fact, a viewpoint like few others: from here, you can take in the entire Gulf of Policastro, the rocky coves, and the beaches below, with shades of blue and green that shift depending on the light. The view toward the village of Maratea and the surrounding mountains is spectacular, offering a clear sense of the town’s strategic position between the sea and the mountains.

A visit to Redentore is therefore perfect for those who enjoy combining culture, light hiking, and photography.
Whether you arrive by car or on foot, the feeling of standing atop one of Basilicata’s most breathtaking viewpoints is unforgettable; a must-see for any curious traveler who wants to explore Southern Italy without missing out on its unique landscapes.
